C. 11:1-53 RESURRECTION OF LAZARUS: THIRD SIGN ASSURING JESUS' DEATH
1. 11:1-16 THE DEATH OF LAZARUS
a. 11:1 Now a certain manwas sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her :sister Martha.

b. 11:2 MARY WHO ANOINTED THE LORD WITH OINTMENT

And it was Mariam who anointed the Lord with ointment,

and wiped his :feet with her :hair, whose :brother Lazarus was sick.
c. 11:3 The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, see, hewhom you love is sick.

d. 11:4 JESUS EXPLAINS THIS SICKNESS

But when :Jesus heard it, he said,

This :sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of :God,

that the Son of :God be glorified by it.
e. 11:5 Now :Jesus loved :Martha, and her :sister, and :Lazarus.

f. 11:6 JESUS DELAYS HIS RESPONSE

When therefore he heard that he was sick,

he then accordingly remained two days in the place where he was.
g. 11:7 Thereupon after this he said to the disciples, Let us go into :Judea again.

h. 11:8 THE DISCIPLES ALARMED

The disciples say to him, Rabbi, the Jews were butnow seeking
hoi IouDAIoi; kai PAlin huPAgeis eKEI?
to stone you; and do you go there again?
i. 11:9a Jesus answered, Are therenot twelve hours in the day?

j. 11:9b If one walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this :world.

k. 11:10 But if one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

l. 11:11 JESUS FORETELLS HIS ACTION FOR LAZARUS
TAUta EIpen: kai meTA TOUto LEgei auTOIS,
These thingsspoke he: and after this he said to them,

Our :friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I awake him.
m. 11:12 The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.

n. 11:13 THE NATURE OF THEIR MISUNDERSTANDING

Now :Jesus had spoken of his :death:

but THEY thought that he spoke of taking:rest in :sleep.
o. 11:14 Then :Jesus therefore said to them openly, Lazarus is dead.

p. 11:15 And I am glad for you that I was not there, that you may believe; but let us go unto him.

q. 11:16 THOMAS STILL MISUNDERSTANDS
EIpen oun ThoMAS, ho leGOme-nos DIdu-mos, tois sun-ma-theTAIS,
Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his:fellow-disciples,
Ago-men kai heMEIS, HIna a-poTHAno-men met' auTOU.
Let US also go, that we may die with him.
NOTE: This is the beginning of the account of the last “sign” of Jesus - the one that finally precipitated the decision of the Jewish leaders to kill Him - and Lazarus too, because many people were now believing in Jesus because of this resurrection from the dead.
The deliberate delay on Jesus' part to come and merely heal Lazarus when he was sick, yet set the stage for the impact on the crowd, and the many who started to believe for what was to follow. Jesus by-passed the plea of Mary and Martha, so that God could be more greatly glorified, and that it would give occasion for His disciples to deepen their faith in Him. His delayed response did everything He designed it to do. And - all He did - was at His Father's leading.
11:1-16 is a unique subdivision setting the stage for what was about to follow. J.A.W.
